Dilated capillaries are thin red or bluish vessels that become visible on the surface of the skin. Most often they appear on the sides of the nose, the cheeks and the chin, less often on the legs and other parts of the body. Sometimes it is a single vessel, sometimes a fine network or a persistent redness that does not go away on its own.
Capillaries are not dangerous in themselves. But they change the look of the face: the skin appears irritated, uneven in tone, tired. And covering it with foundation day after day is not a solution.
The vessel wall loses its tone and stops coping with the load. There are usually several reasons at once:
That is why at the consultation the doctor asks not only about the skin, but also about lifestyle, home care and general health. A vessel can be removed with a laser, but to keep a new one from appearing in its place it is important to understand what led to it.
Light energy is absorbed selectively by the haemoglobin inside the vessel. The vessel heats up, its walls seal together and it gradually stops filling with blood. The body removes it from circulation on its own, and blood flow is redistributed to the neighbouring healthy vessels.
The surrounding skin is not damaged, the care procedure is precise. We can work both with a single vessel and with a wider area of redness.
This is not a complete list. The final decision is always made at an in-person consultation: the doctor examines the skin, assesses the depth and spread of the vessels and only then suggests a plan. If the care procedure is not advisable right now, you will be told so directly.
Two weeks before the care procedure, avoid sunbathing, the solarium and self-tanner. One week before, remove retinol, acids and scrubs from your routine. Come without make-up: the skin should be calm, clean and free of active inflammation.
First the examination and the choice of settings for your skin type and type of vessel. Then a protective gel is applied to the skin, you put on protective glasses, and the specialist works over the area with short pulses. It feels like the snap of a thin rubber band, quite bearable, and anaesthesia is usually not needed.
Working with a single vessel takes a few minutes, a large area of redness up to half an hour.
Straight after the care procedure the skin may turn red, become sensitive and swell slightly. This is a normal reaction and passes within a few hours, less often within a couple of days. The vessel itself often becomes darker and more visible in the first days: it has sealed and started to break down. This is an expected stage, not a complication.
A small crust may form where the laser was applied. Do not pick it off, it will come away on its own within a few days.
For the first week: no retinol, acids or scrubs, no sauna or swimming pool. SPF every day is compulsory, otherwise pigment may remain where the laser worked.
The final result takes about four weeks to form, the skin needs time to clear the cared for vessel.
A single vessel often disappears after one care procedure. With pronounced couperose or multiple vessels, one to three care procedures with an interval of three to four weeks are usually needed. The exact number depends on the depth of the vessels and on how your skin responds, so promising a specific figure in advance would not be honest.
And one more important thing: the laser removes the vessel that is already there, but it does not cancel the cause. If the triggers remain, new ones may appear over time. That is why the appointment also covers home care, sun protection and the habits that put a load on the vessels.
